ITINERARY:
10AM (11am on Sundays): Depart Cork City Centre Tourist Information Office.
Drive through country roads to the beautiful and charming town of Kinsale. Your tour-guide will explain to you the background of towns famous battle, which changed the course of Irish history.
The battle of Kinsale: In 1601 Kinsale was the site of a battle in which English forces defeated an Irish/Spanish force, led by the princes Hugh roe o'Donnell and Hugh O'Neill. Following this battle a number of the native Irish aristocrats were forced to abandon their lands and fled to mainland Europe (Flights of the Earls 1607)
Photo stop to view the harbour and Charles Fort. Located at Summer Cove and dating from 1677, Charles Fort is a fortification that guards the entrance to Kinsale harbour. It was built to protect the area and specifically the harbour from use by the French and Spanish in the event of a landing in Ireland. James Fort is located on the other side of the cove. An underwater chain used to be strung between the two forts across the harbour mouth during times of war to scuttle enemy shipping by ripping the bottom out of incoming vessels.
Food!
Kinsale is also the gourmet capital of Ireland, with amazing restautants and barfood. It has been home to many famous people, including Celebrity Chef Keith Floyd (RIP) and Princess Fergie.
You'll have free time to wander the medieval streets of Kinsale; think flowers, colour, a beautiful local accent and great shops and you have a picture of this little gem of an Irish town!
12noon: Depart Kinsale. Next stop Cobh, the Titanic's last stop...
A pleasant drive through the rolling Cork countryside brings us to Cobh, the departure point for thousands of emigrants who left for America between 1848 - 1850. This once bustling harbour was the final port of call for the titanic, 123 passengers boarded, in all only 44 survived. Colourful Cobh was also the port of embarkation for men, women and children deported to penal colonies, mainly Australia. Visit the magnificent St. Coleman¹s
Cathedral and famous Museum (Seasonal).
