Overview

Join Paddywagon Tours for an unforgettable shore excursion along the Slea Head Drive, widely regarded as one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world. Voted the number one destination for dramatic landscapes by top photography magazines, this route offers panoramic views, ancient heritage sites, and rich Gaelic culture, making it a must-see for visitors to the Dingle Peninsula.

Your journey begins at Ventry Beach, a stunning stretch of sand at the edge of the Atlantic. From there, we travel into the heart of Corca Dhuibhne, a traditional Gaeltacht (Gaelic-speaking) region known for its strong cultural identity. Along the route, you'll see the 4,000-year-old Beehive Huts, incredible stone structures offering insight into early Irish life.

As we wind toward Dunquin, prepare for spectacular views of the Great Blasket Island and the famous Sleeping Giantrock formation. These dramatic landscapes are ideal for photography and offer a true taste of Ireland's wild Atlantic beauty. We’ll also stop at Coumeenoole Beach and Clogherhead, filming locations for Far and Away, showcasing the natural beauty that attracted Hollywood filmmakers.

The tour continues through the charming village of Ballyferriter, another Irish-speaking community full of local charm, before we arrive back in Dingle Village. Known for its vibrant fishing culture, Dingle has featured in films like Ryan’s Daughter and Far and Away, and holds the distinction of having 52 pubs for just 2,000 residents—the highest pub-to-person ratio in Ireland!

You’ll also hear stories about Fungi the Dolphin, Dingle’s most beloved (and now legendary) former resident, who brought joy to locals and visitors alike for decades. Enjoy free time to explore the colorful streets, visit local shops, or relax in a traditional pub with live Irish music and fresh seafood.

This tour is perfect for cruise passengers arriving at Dingle Harbour, with a convenient meeting point just steps from your ship. With experienced local guides, small group sizes, and a guaranteed return to your ship on time, Paddywagon Tours offers the ideal way to explore Ireland’s most scenic peninsula in comfort and style.

Itinerary

  • Depart Dingle Port

Meet your guide at the Dingle Port Car Park. Your shore tours starts @ 08:00 so we recommend going us at least 15 minutes in advance of departure.
  • Slea Head

Slea Head offers raw, windswept beauty, guiding you along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Wild Atlantic Way. As you wind through the narrow, cliff-hugging roads of the Dingle Peninsula, you’ll encounter ancient stone beehive huts (clochán), rugged green pastures partitioned by endless dry-stone walls, and the occasional flock of sheep asserting their right-of-way.

From the Slea Head viewing point itself, the landscape opens up into a breathtaking panorama: the jagged, mist-covered Blasket Islands rising defiantly from the turquoise Atlantic, and the sheer, vertical cliffs plunging into the crashing surf below.

It is a place where the land feels like it is falling off the edge of the world, offering a profound sense of isolation and geological grandeur that stays with you long after you’ve left the coast.

We pause at Slea Head viewing point from 08:30 - 08:45
  • Dingle town

Between 10:30 and 12:00, Dingle town is at its most charming. Stroll from the harbor, where fishing boats bob in the crisp morning air, up into town. The streets are a vibrant display of colorful storefronts, bustling with local artisans and boutiques. Treat yourself to a world-famous scoop at Murphy’s Ice Cream, or wander past iconic pubs like Foxy John’s for a classic Irish aesthetic. It’s a compact, walkable, and sensory-rich experience and perfect, relaxed introduction to authentic West Kerry life.
  • Inch Beach

At 12:30, Inch Beach is a breathtaking expanse of golden sand stretching three miles into the Atlantic. By 13:00, you’ll likely see surfers catching waves as the tide shifts, with the Dingle Peninsula’s mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. It’s the perfect spot for a brisk, invigorating stroll; the sheer scale of the dune system and the rhythmic, thunderous roar of the surf create a profound sense of wild, natural scale. Maybe grab a quick bite at the beach-side café before you depart, savoring the salty, windswept air. It is raw, majestic, and undeniably one of Ireland’s most spectacular coastal sights.
  • Return to Dingle Port

Return to Dingle Port for 13:30 in good time to board your cruise ship again and to enjoy some rest and recuperation before departure.
