Depart Dublin
Join your tour at O'Connell Street just opposite the iconic GPO building. Our custom Mercedes-Benz touring van is designed for an intimate experience, seating a maximum of 14 guests in total comfort.
As we turn west along the banks of the River Liffey we'll drive between two downtown districts known as The Liberties and Smithfield. During the Victorian era of the 19th century, the British Empire was at its absolute peak. The square mile either side of us was known as the Golden Triangle with 37 distilleries operating simultaneously.
At this time, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. Dublin whiskey benefited immensely from this global network; it wasn't just a local drink—it was the premium spirit of the Empire, prized far above Scotch at the time and shipped as far as Hong Kong, India, Australia, Canada and the United States - dominating global markets.
The Golden Triangle was a staggering concentration of industry; the air in the Liberties was famously thick with the scent of the "Angel's Share" - vapour from the distillation process evaporating to the heavens. To give you an idea of the scale, George Roe’s distillery alone covered 17 acres and was the largest in the world at the time, while even John Power, the smallest of the "Big Four," produced five times more whiskey than Scotland’s largest distillery.
As we drive toward Kilbeggan, we are essentially moving from what was once the "Wall Street" of whiskey production into the heart of its rural, artisanal roots. Sit back and imagine the massive wooden kegs being rolled down the dockside as we make our way out of Dublin.
